Madurai is a major city in the In Tamilnadu. It is the administrative headquarters of Madurai District. Madurai is the third largest city in Tamilnadu and is the 25th populated city. Located on the banks of River Vaigai.

This institute originally was started as Industrial School and attached to Tamilnadu Polytechnic, Madurai under the control of Director of Industries and commerce, Chennai. Then this institute was elevated as Government Industrial Training Institute under the control of Director of Employment and Training, Chennai. Now this Industrial Training Institute is functioning at this permanent building with effect from 04.09.1961.
The Government Industrial Training Institute, Madurai was opened by former Honorable Chief Minister Thiru.K.Kamaraj on 4th September 1962.
In order to promote skilled personnel, this Industrial Training Institute was started for imparting training to students under Craftsmen Training Scheme as per G.O.Ms.No: 1134 Industries & Commerce Department dated 02.09.1959.
This Industrial Training Institute comprises an area of 8.64 acres. The existing buildings were constructed during the year 1960. Then additional workshop was also constructed under expansion of this Industrial Training Institute.
For the benefit of students, hostel facility is available at a distance of 1 Km from this Industrial Training Institute situated near MoondruMavadi, Alagarkoil Road, Madurai. In this hostel, both accommodation and best food provided to the trainees.
Courses offered at this ITI are generally divided into two categories named as Engineering and Non-Engineering and also offered the short term courses which are provided by Tamilnadu Skill Development Corporation (TNSDC). In this ITI, 15 courses offered under Engineering category, 5 courses offered under Non-Engineering category and 4 short-term courses offered under TNSDC.
